Understanding Osteoarthritis: A Guide from Redcore Physical Therapy

Jun26th 2025

As we age, it’s natural for our bodies to experience some wear and tear. One common condition that many people encounter is osteoarthritis (OA), often referred to as “wear-and-tear arthritis.” At Redcore Physical Therapy, we believe that understanding OA is the first step towards effectively managing it and maintaining a good quality of life.

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects millions worldwide. It occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. This cartilage allows bones to glide smoothly over each other. When it deteriorates, the bones can rub directly, leading to pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced joint mobility. While OA can affect any joint, it most commonly impacts the hands, knees, hips, and spine.

What Causes Osteoarthritis?

While aging is the primary risk factor, several other factors can contribute to the development and progression of OA:

 * Age: The risk of OA increases with age.

 * Genetics: A family history of OA can increase your likelihood of developing it.

 * Obesity: Excess weight puts increased stress on weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips.

 * Joint Injury or Overuse: Previous injuries, such as fractures or ligament tears, or repetitive stress on a joint, can accelerate cartilage breakdown.

 * Certain Occupations or Sports: Activities that involve repetitive joint stress can contribute to OA.

 * Other Medical Conditions: Some metabolic disorders or inflammatory diseases can increase the risk of OA.

Recognizing the Symptoms

The symptoms of osteoarthritis typically develop slowly and worsen over time. Common signs include:

 * Pain: Often described as an aching or deep pain in the affected joint, which may worsen with activity and improve with rest.

 * Stiffness: Especially noticeable after periods of inactivity, such as waking up in the morning or sitting for a long time. This “morning stiffness” usually lasts less than 30 minutes.

 * Tenderness: The joint may feel tender when you press on or around it.

 * Loss of Flexibility: You might not be able to move your joint through its full range of motion.

 * Grating Sensation or Popping Sound: You might hear or feel a “creaking” or “grating” sensation (crepitus) when you move the joint.

 * Swelling: Caused by soft tissue inflammation around the joint.

 * Bone Spurs: Hard lumps may form around the affected joint.

How Physical Therapy Can Help

While there’s no cure for osteoarthritis, physical therapy plays a crucial role in managing symptoms, improving function, and slowing the progression of the disease. At Redcore Physical Therapy, our experienced team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that may include:

 * Pain Management Techniques: Utilizing modalities like heat, ice, or electrical stimulation to reduce pain and inflammation.

 * Therapeutic Exercises: Strengthening exercises for the muscles surrounding the affected joint can provide better support and reduce stress on the cartilage. Flexibility exercises improve range of motion and reduce stiffness.

 * Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques to improve joint mobility and reduce muscle tension.

 * Gait and Balance Training: If OA affects your lower body, we can help improve your walking pattern and reduce your risk of falls.

 * Education and Self-Management Strategies: We’ll teach you about proper body mechanics, joint protection techniques, and how to modify activities to minimize joint stress. We can also advise on assistive devices if needed.

 * Weight Management Guidance: For those who are overweight, we can offer strategies to help reduce the load on your joints.
